Our brand new Modern Quilter’s Guild in the North West

Hi.

That’s right – there’s a brand new Modern Quilter’s Guild here in the U.K and you’ll never guess where we meet at the moment! Wow, well done! Yes, we meet at Stitchscape studio once a month, on a late Friday afternoon. Since we’re a start-up group with less than 10 members; that suits us fine and we can also be a part of it for free for this year. Obviously I hope that the group will grow successfully and we’ll need a new venue but for now, we’re enjoying starting up and seeing where this takes us all.

What is modern quilting?

According to the MQG website it is – “Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. “Modern traditionalism” or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.” According to me; it’s what we make it. It’s how we use modern technology and fabrics to make our projects. How we get inspiration. How we share our makes with the world. How we interact with the world.

Why bother?

I’m doing this as a means of getting people who enjoy all that patchwork and quilting, involved in a modern day setting and bringing them together ‘for real’ . That usually means social media these days but no, we all do that already. This group is where we meet face-to-face to inspire, motivate and learn from each other. Oh and yer, a fair bit of fun and giggles are on the agenda each month too hopefully.

Should I join?

I can’t answer that but you will only really know if you give it a shot and try it out. If we stay under 10 members we can stay in the MQG free for now. And we don’t have to make a decision on that until January 2017. The usual rule applies though – the more interested, motivated, keen people who join, the better it will be. Simple.

What does it cost?

We can be members of the MQG for free at the moment.  I need to charge £15 per session to help cover my rental costs of the studio and to pay for my time organising things. I need that payment a week in advance of each meeting, so that I know how many will need catering for. I’m hoping 6 people can make the meetings each month. There will always be some months you can’t make it but you can still be involved via email etc, so that you know what’s going on and can join in from home, for that month you miss.

What will you do each meeting?

We’ll chat. We’ll have a brew and something to nibble on no doubt. We’ll possibly chat some more about patchwork and quilting. Another brew? …. It is all about meeting up and making new patchworky friends after all. We can have a look at some books; especially Lynne Goldsworthy’s new ‘Quick and easy quilts’ book.Splendid sampler blocks for modern quilting guild in the NW UK

But no, seriously, what I have planned is a bit of a secret still and some parts of it will remain a secret until the few days before each meeting, as I’ve had the idea of a Secret Santa Sampler, with the main inspiration and guidance coming from the fab Splendid Sampler project. Many of you will already know about Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson’s idea of having designers create their own patchwork block and have it included in the whole #splendidsampler project. I’ve come up with a slant on that for our group and I’m calling it the Secret Santa Sampler. That might give it away a bit but still, that’s all I’m saying for now.
